Why We Chose One of Our Premier Furniture Suppliers
Why is Cathers Home so in alignment with one of our premier furniture suppliers and it’s founder? Well…Cathers Home founder and CEO Paul Cathers has traveled a similar path (as we’ve described here) and shares similar views and values having traveled the far reaches of the world and discovered similar situations and circumstances in other parts of the world. That’s just one of the reasons Cathers Home has chosen to introduce this to its clients in Aspen.
Here’s the history of this manufacturer and its founder:
It started as a journey of self-discovery in 1991 when founder, Brett Hatton, set off to retrace the ancient Silk Trade route from China to Europe. Along the way he discovered antique furniture and rare architectural pieces in Pakistan and India and soon returned to purchase his first container for the opening of a retail store in England. Brett named it Four Hands, since each piece was hand-selected and touched by hand.
In 1996, Brett took his first big risk. With no backers, no sales force, and having never attended a trade show;
he borrowed everything he could from family and friends and opened a wholesale importer business in Austin, Texas. Within three years he had built a business that was growing 120% annually.
He took a second risk by forsaking antiques for new production. Historically, Indian exports were low quality and poorly finished. The company focused on its own original designs, aligning factories, introducing new techniques, and putting its own QA team on the ground. As a result, Four Hands helped lead the Lifestyle trend, one of the hottest segments in the industry.
Next came expansion throughout Asia, including purchasing a factory in China and achieving a balanced load between India and China. Four Hands now has permanent, international offices in China and India. We now have operations in Indonesia, Thailand, Central America and Mexico.
Evolution
Inspired by a desire to give back to the overseas countries that had influenced him so much, founder Brett Hatton established the Learn to Live Foundation in 2004. Learn to Live aims to better the lives of children in India by providing them with the self-esteem, confidence, education, skills, and mental aptitude to become tomorrow’s world leaders.
Four Hands’ Learn to Live Foundation soon partnered with the Miracle Foundation (TMF), announcing the ongoing sponsorship of 20 orphaned children in TMF’s Sooch Village orphanage (Ranchi, India) and the construction of two orphanage cottages at the Bhawani Home for Children (Jharsuguda, India).
The Miracle Foundation, based in Austin, is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of orphans in India and around the world. TMF operates four children’s homes and one home for unwed mothers. Founded eight years ago on Mother’s Day by Caroline Boudreaux, TMF renovates existing orphanages, builds new ones, raises money for construction and finds sponsors for the children.
India has more than 25 million orphans – equal to the population of Texas. Hatton noted that his foundation’s goal is to help improve each orphan’s life and to work to end the cycle of poverty through education. “TMF is a natural choice for us to partner. They have achieved so much in such a short time.”
Cathers Home founder, Paul Cathers continues to design and manufacture his own brand of home furnishings with partners in India. He also continues to design and manufacture artisan quality rugs in Nepal. His efforts are intended to assist and support the lives of others less fortunate than he in these developing countries.

Beatriz Ball…the Best Choice for Today’s Bride
Beatriz Ball, the best choice for today’s bride is now available at Cathers Home just outside of Aspen, CO.
This hand forged metal ware was inspired in 1991 when the Beatriz Ball founder began working hand-in-hand with skilled metal-ware artisans in the outskirts of Mexico city, jointly creating update, innovative designs in special lustrous alloy of many metals.
These beautifully inspired pieces are made entirely by hand, one at a time, using the ancient art of sand casting:
pouring a premium quality alloy of molten aluminum into sand molds and then going through 4 levels of polishing.
More than 12 hands are involved in the creation of each piece and the result of this intensely handmade process is a piece with a depth of character, warmth and personality that communicates in a way that only a handmade piece can…

American Leather & American Leather Sofas are Key Players in Our Interior Design Projects
Cathers Home would like to introduce you to one of their key suppliers of fine American made leather furniture. The company, appropriately named, is American Leather just outside of Dallas, Texas.
In addition to their superior leather sofas, sofa beds, recliners, chairs, ottomans and beds…here is one of the things we and our customers LOVE about American Leather furniture:
A history of innovation
American Leather was founded in 1990 on one revolutionary idea: custom leather furniture could be made and shipped in three weeks. Founder/CEO Bob Duncan applied “just-in-time” manufacturing he admired from the Japanese car industry to the furniture industry. From a small four person shop, the company has grown into a thriving leader in the furniture industry, with over 130 different collections sold in over 650 stores, including Room and Board, Crate and Barrel, Macy’s, Design Within Reach, and Relax the Back.
The factory, based just outside of Dallas, Texas, still makes furniture – now in leather and fabric – in just three weeks, a standard that’s three times faster than the industry average. From the beginning, the factory was set up to manage mass customization through the latest technology and manufacturing systems, making American Leather the most automated leather furniture manufacturer in North America, if not the world.

Because it is through our values and ideals that you’ll understand and appreciate the soul of our products, which is the result not only of our knowledge and experience, but, above all, of our beliefs, our hopes and our fears.
For about a third of a century, Gamma International has been manufacturing high profile contemporary Italian furniture in order to satisfy the most demanding and sophisticated palates.

In fact, we still find pleasure and gratification in spending long hours to come up with a new detail or a perfectly proportioned shape, we are incessantly studying a way to improve a material or a design, with the curiosity, innocence and ingenuity of those visionary people who don’t just accept and follow trends, but want to play a part in shaping them.
Thanks to this mindset, attention to the needs of our customers becomes of paramount importance. We genuinely understand that every person is unique, and this is why we custom-tailor each and every sofa around the dreams of our clients. Hancock and Moore Quality Home Furnishings Grace Our Showroom Floor
Cathers Home has selected Hancock and Moore to be a part of their fine home furniture showroom floor. As we are accustomed to working with discerning and sophisticated clientele from the Aspen area, we feel Hancock and Moore furniture is a perfect offering for our customers and their fine mountain homes.
Here’s a little bit ore about Hancock and Moore Furniture:
PASSION FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP
Deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Hancock & Moore started with a vision to manufacture the finest quality furniture that would remain beautiful for generations. This became reality in 1981, when Hancock & Moore was founded. That vision is displayed in each piece of Hancock & Moore furniture through the skillful touch of master craftsmen like Jimmy Moore.
He grew up learning the skills of a carpenter, turning wood into artful creations. The desire to make distinctive furniture was an instilled value and the skill to make it was a gift. He spent hours carving, hand-sanding, sewing and upholstering handcrafted pieces. This, he decided, was the “ideal” way to build a unique brand of furniture. With the help of his fellow craftsmen, he transforms solid woods, soft leathers and fine fabrics into handcrafted furnishings no machine could ever match. Each piece of Hancock & Moore furniture bears the signatures of these artisans that created it. Whether it is crafting custom orders, or surveying production, his skilled vision for perfection remains.
Jimmy Moore is one of the last to leave at the end of each work day, assuring that your handcrafted Hancock & Moore piece will result in furniture that you will enjoy and can be proud of for years to come.

New Tufenkian Rugs, Handmade Wool Tibetan Carpets Just In
Cathers Home announces an all new shipment of Tufenkian rugs and carpets into their rug gallery showroom. Cathers Home is the exclusive Tufenkian carpet dealer in the Roaring Fork Valley and Aspen. Tufenkian rugs and carpets are an incredible labor of love and mastery of craft. Tufenkian’s mission is this:
to create exquisite things that enrich the lives of those who experience them as well as those who create them
Here’s the story of what goes into every Tufenkian Carpet and Rug:
Tufenkian’s Production
The art of making carpets by hand using the finest materials is cherished and nurtured by Tufenkian. Each carpet is carefully crafted, using methods and techniques that are virtually unchanged from time beyond memory in the service of contemporary design. The glowing variations inherent in natural materials and the human touch are celebrated by Tufenkian in every stage of the process, the result of a commitment to promote individuality and inspiration in all of its production. Truly, each carpet is unique unto itself, created over the course of a journey through a sea of human hands that weave it into existence.
Though the process outlined below focuses on Tibetan carpets, most of the steps and techniques are also used to create Tufenkian’s Armenian rugs as well.
Shearing
Tibetan sheep are raised by nomads in the Himalayan Mountains, which range from 12,000 to 20,000 feet above seal level. They produce lustrous, resilient, lanolin-rich wool that is considered the finest in the world for rug production.
Washing
In order to preserve the natural lanolin, personality and character of its fibers, Tufenkian wool is never bleached or scoured. Instead, it is washed gently in local rivers to remove impurities.
Drying
After the wool is washed, it is moved to the riverbanks or nearby fields to dry naturally in the sun.
Sorting
Tibetan sheep are not bred for uniformity as in other countries. Therefore, the wool is sorted according to color variations: white, beige, dark brown and black.
Carding
Using a metal-bristled brush, the fibers of the wool are roughly aligned in preparation for hand spinning.
Spinning
Using simple, foot-powered wooden wheels, the wool is spun into yarn. This process creates many of the beautiful imperfections found in Tufenkian carpets.
Dyeing
Dyeing is done in energy-efficient sealed containers for color control and to save energy. Swiss Metal Complex dyes are used, which are more consistent in color and will never run or fade, while allowing the natural character of the wool to express itself.
Weaving
The weavers follow the pattern shown on a full-sized graph that hangs in front of them. There are usually four to five workers for a 9’ x 12’ rug, which is made up of 650,000 to 1.5 million knots and takes an astonishing 3,000 hours of human labor to complete.
Carving
Once the carpet is woven, it is leveled with large shears, and then finely detailed with light carving between colors, adding subtle impact to the carpet design.
Finishing Wash
Tufenkian carpets are either washed in Europe’s premiere washing and finishing facility or in the Tufenkian (Nepal) wash—an environmentally-responsible system developed by Tufenkian in Nepal that, for most carpets, matches the quality of European washing and is unsurpassed in environmental responsibility.
Cathers Home is the Exclusive Tufenkian Rug and Carpet Dealer in the Roaring Fork Valley including the communities of Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, Snowmass, Vail and Aspen Colorado.
